Indiana HB 1835 was passed on the Senate Floor Today!
(27 to 21 vote)
The ISA would like to give a special thank you to everyone who has made an effort to contact their legislators!
Your contacts have worked!
We are still not out of the woods yet. The next steps for the bill are described below.
UPDATE as of March 29, 2007
Many questions have been asked as to where the bill will go from here. As many of you already know the legislative process can take many different twists and turns before everything is complete. The following is the legislative process from this point:
HB 1835 will now go to the Conference Committee
Conference Committee
- They work out the differences and develop a committee report
(Since the bill has passed one house already it could also be amended into another similar bill)
- Report goes back to the house as a NEW version of HB 1835
- House votes on Conference Committee Version of the bill
- If it PASSES the House floor:
i. Moves back to the Senate for their vote
ii. If it PASSES the Senate floor it will then move to the Governor
iii. Governor has the last say (see his choices below)
The Governor has 3 choices:
1. Sign the bill and allow it to become law
2. Refuse to sign but allow it to become law without his endorsement
3. Veto the bill
