It wasn’t a frightful performance but it was an impressive one. Chandler Bing and Trace Tetrick kicked off Fright Night at the races Friday, October 30 with an impressive win in the Open 3, recording a new lifetime mark.
Chandler Bing began from post three and Tetrick had him primed and ready to attack as soon as the gate folded. He went straight to the lead without opposition as Yourwishisgranted and Kevin Lambright made a move toward the lead and stayed to the outside showing interest in the top spot. However, Tetrick made sure there was enough room behind them for Yourwishisgranted to get in the two-hole before the quarter in :25.3. Down the backstretch, Chandler Bing was in full command and everyone stayed tucked in behind him through the half in :53.4.
It seemed as if everyone was waiting for someone to move to the outside. That finally happened midway through the final turn as Kyle Wilfong tipped Dandy’s Freedom to the outside, which made Tellmeitmatters follow suit for John DeLong.
In the stretch, Chandler Bing was still holding onto the lead, but was getting a little leg weary. Horses began to close in on the outside, but Chandler Bing dug in gamely, fending them off to the wire by a neck in 1:48.1, a new career best. Tellmeitmatters finished second over Dandy’s Freedom. Every horse in the race except one paced under the 1:50 time barrier.
Chandler Bing paid $9.00 for the win. The four-year-old Tellitlikeitis gelding is owned by Alvin Miller and Twila Harts, yet another strong Indiana pacer on their resume as owners. Alvin Miller trains the gelding, who was bred by Glen Yoder. The dam, Northern Beauty, was a good race mare herself and even raced at Harrah’s Hoosier Park and was driven by Trace Tetrick. She ended up with a mark of 1:52.1 before becoming a brood mare.
As a brood mare, Northern Beauty is a 100 percent producer. Chandler Bing is now her fastest and richest, with just under $400,000 in career earnings. She has also produced Dr Drake (1:51.2) and Babe’s Image (1:55.0) and has a yearling this year named Elouise Shmelouise by Capt Midnight and a weanling colt by Tellitlikeitis named Frank Jr Jr.
Later in the card, Odds on Outlier and Peter Wrenn scored a win in the $18,000 Open 2 Pace before racing turned over to the stakes on the program. The duo came into the race with four wins on the season and also lowered his career best to 1:49.4. After getting away last, Wrenn saved ground around the final turn and moved up the inside before moving to the outside in the stretch and was widest of all and the fastest finisher for the win over Im Skinnydipin N and Trace Tetrick. Combustion and John DeLong finished third.
Odds On Outlier paid $11.20 for the win. The Sweet Lou four-year-old is owned by Odds on Racing and trained by Melanie Wrenn.
