Indiana gelding nearing $100,000
Tell’s Super Star turned in a big final quarter in his race Monday, March 23 at Miami Valley Raceway. The Indiana sired gelding earned his first win of the season, scoring a big payout for his backers.
Tell’s Super Star and Trevor Smith wanted no part of the early speed when the gate folded. Smith took a big hold of Tell’s Super Star and went to almost the back of the pack as a group of horses left seeking the top spot, including fellow Indiana sired Checkers Legacy, driven by Josiah Miller. Whatchagonnado and Chris Page were the heavy favorites and picked up the top spot before the quarter in :27.3, but were overtaken by Don’t Tell Rosa and Cameron McCown just after the quarter pole. Several horses were left on the outside including Rockinpoppin and David Miller and Checkers Legacy. Rockinpoppin cleared the top spot down the backstretch the second time, which moved Checkers Legacy up on the outside.
Heading into the final turn, Sinatra Hanover had moved out and picked up cover behind Checkers Legacy, and Tell’s Super Star also moved to the outside. When Checkers Legacy appeared stalled, Sinatra Hanover moved three wide in the final turn, and so did Tell’s Super Star.
At the head of the lane, Tell’s Super Star had tipped off Sinatra Hanover and was widest of all, hoping to catch the Rockinpoppin. The Indiana gelding hit another gear and rallied past all his rivals to score the win by three-quarters of a length in 1:52.4. Rockinpoppin finished second with Checkers Legacy rounding out the trifecta.
Tell’s Super Star paid $108.40 for the win. The five-year-old son of Tellitlikeitis is owned by Therl Hensley and trained by Gerald Miller. The gelding is a product of Victory Hill Farm’s standout broodmare Bikini Star, who is the mother of numerous standout racehorses, including last year’s Rock Shines Again, undefeated three-year-old who earned year-end honors in Indiana. Tell’s Super Star nearly equaled his career best time in the effort and moved him closer to the $100,000 mark in earnings. It was his seventh career win.
Earlier in the night, another Indiana pacer found his way to the winner’s circle in the starter allowance. Tabooma and Tyler Smith turned in a gate to wire effort to score the win in 1:53.3 over Peppermint Man and Parker Smith. Nassau Desire and Chris Page finished third.
Tabooma paid $12.00 for the win. The eight-year-old son of Always a Virgin is owned by S & S Racing Stable and trained by Daniel Stone. Walter Fister of Kentucky bred the gelding, who now has 18 career wins and more than $200,000 in earnings. His career best time of 1:49.4 was taken as a five-year-old at Miami Valley Raceway.
