Mellow Fellow and J.D. Finn came to life in the stretch Thursday, May 28 in the $12,500 conditioned pace at Harrah’s Hoosier Park. The duo rallied home to a lifetime best in 1:51.3, a final panel in :26.1.
When the gate began to fold, Mellow Fellow was on the move and easily slid over to the top spot with Darknstormy Deo and LeWayne miller holding their position on the inside. Cowboy Show and John DeLong dropped in the three hole as Mellow Fellow led the way through the quarter in :29.0. Cowboy Show was having trouble staying in a hole, so DeLong moved him to the outside and he shot to the lead like a bullet, taking over at the half in :57.3. The top three were lengths ahead of the rest of the field heading into the final turn.
At the head of the lane, Mellow Fellow tipped off Cowboy Show and began to show his intentions that he planned to retake the lead. Cowboy Show wasn’t backing down and the two pacers fought hard all the way down the lane. In the final eighth, Mellow Fellow began to get the edge over Cowboy Show and moved out to a one and three-quarter length advantage for the win over Cowboy Show. Darknstormy Deo finished third.
Mellow Fellow paid $5.40 for the win. The three-year-old son of Rockin Image is owned by Ira Steinberg and trained by Finn. Lyle Bontrager and Lamar Yoder bred and raised the gelding, who has been first or second in all six starts this season. He sold under the name Burbon Chocolate at the Northern Indiana Yearling Speed Sale for $10,000 to Steinberg. He is the only foal of the JK Endofanera mare Skyway Damsel, who took a mark of 1:52.4 during her brief career.
Later in the program, Helpfull Yankee and Jay Cross used a second half move to trot right on by her opponents for the win in 1:58.1 in the $10,000 conditioned trot. What Don’t Ya Know and Robert Taylor finished one and three-quarter lengths back in second followed by Proxie’s Photo and Kevin Detweiler for third.
Helpfull Yankee paid $47.20 as the longest shot in the field. The Helpisontheway sophomore is owned and trained by Scott Christner. Marlin and Marlin Graber Jr. bred and raised the filly, who competed on the Indiana Sired Fair Circuit last year. It was the first win of the season for Helpfull Yankee, who now has five career wins and more than $15,000 on her card.
